My optics background began in the U.S. Navy in 1974. It was there that I was trained to service and repair a variety of naval instruments used on ships and submarines.
In June, 1974, I was graduated from the Navy’s Opticalman (OM) school with honors, 2nd in my class. For two years, I was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii at the Sub Base Optical Shop. During my second year there, my chief assigned me the responsibility of all small instrument repairs. My position there consisted of service and calibration of binoculars, hand held sextants, hand held range finders, and PMP’s. I would say without a doubt that the Navy was where I learned to work on precision optical instruments with discipline, attention to detail and doing things correctly the first time. I believe this discipline has been carried on throughout my life and has played an important role in why Microscoptics has been successful for over twenty-two years.
Upon leaving the Navy, I went to work for my father in his optical dispensing lab in Salem Oregon. A few years later, I moved my family to southern California where I took a two year position with a precision optics manufacturer, Melles & Griot .
We moved to Michigan in 1985 and I went to work for a small private company servicing microscopes. In 1989, I was hired by Amarel Precision Instruments to develop a service department for their Nikon dealership.
In April, 1992, my wife and I ventured out on our own to start Microscoptics, Inc. Since then we have grown from servicing hospital and educational microscopes to becoming a fully authorized Nikon service facility in both bio & industrial microscopes, and optical measuring instruments. We service all brands of microscopes from educational, university, and industrial research, industrial metallurgical, and precision measuring, to surgical microscopes and optical comparators.
In order to make the best use of my training and background, we decided to apply for ISO/IEC Certification in 2001. We do everything in our power to keep our customers satisfied and maintain our integrity, which translates to holding that certification.
Overall, two creeds I focus on are honesty and discipline to detail. God has blessed me and that’s why I am where I am today.
